A contest for the design of the Chicago Tribune building in 1922 included many proposed designs, including one from Gropius. Walter Gropius was part of the International Style of design, which recognized that walls were no longer significant for structural reasons. Instead they are merely a climate barrier, keeping out the elements. The design that followed, lacked any ornamentation. Raymond Hood, a traditionalist, won the contract from the Chicogo Tribune. His building displays Gothic ornamentation of older cathedral designs. This contest was the epitome of modern vs. tradtional arcitecture. (Arnason, p.313)
